Transgender sports - yes or no ?
Given we've just gone through the Olympics, I thought I would add my two cents to the argument of trans-gendered athletes in sports of the other biological gender.
First, I am not an expert on the subject, just know enough to be educated.
Well, generally I would say doesn't matter a hill of beans.
There are issues with college admissions and scholarships, that's a given. But, if a person is trans-gendered, then inside, they are of that gender, so are they taking anything from anyone else ?
If said person is just saying “I associate with men/women” but aren't trans-gendered, then NO, you can't just take other peoples places in college applications.
With sports itself, team sports, honestly, it can go either way. Look at soccer for example. Women's US soccer national squad, better than men's ? yes. Should men play in with the US women's team, no, why ? Because the men on the squad aren't good enough. Ok, but, that's not the reason really. Could they, yes. From a team standpoint, a woman on the men's squad would be just as fine as a man on the women's squad. Women can play soccer on-par with men, the style is a little different, maybe more fluid ? Men are more brute force ? But that is for another discussion.
There are plenty of other team sports where skills and ability are pretty equal.
The big issue is with individual sports. One issue coming to mind is swimming.
There is in particular a trans-gendered female swimmer that due to cardiovascular difference and muscle structure, beats the top women swimmers. This is not a surprise, really.
Instead of all the whining about he/she shouldn't be involved in his/her new gender sports, maybe find a simple solution ? We already have one, it's called handicapping. It's used in horse racing.
So …. if we take the basic heart's ability between male and females which is around 26%, between ages 18-35. What we need to do is simply deduct around a quarter of the finishing time from a trans-gendered female. This then brings ability inline physically.
Easy. There is no need to be stomping feet saying a trans-gendered male or trans-gendered female can't do this or can't do that because of physical ability or lack thereof, we just need to find simple solutions and move on.
That's my two cents.
